Fishing Aboard The Sea Spray

Well, summer is finally here, no oil spill this year. Fishing trip on! And boy was it fun. The weather was beautiful, the water was slick, and the fishing was outstanding. Thank the Lord! Not to mention, the lumber business picked up just in time to allow us to go. Good food and drink, wonderful friends, and some great fishing action. I rate The Sea Spray a perfect ten.

The first evening and night consist of a ride to the fishing destination. We were to start out at around 120 miles off shore. We loaded the big green egg with red snapper filets and fired up some delicious cheese grits, put on some good tunes, and relaxed. We talked and laughed and the mood was great. We were going to be off work and on a boat for thirty something more hours. And by the way, the snapper and cheese grits were off the chains!

Saturday morning it was time to fish. It was before daylight and we were at the rig after a nice smooth trip. We started by catching a few Blackfin and Baracuda. Then, after sunrise, landed a few nice Mahi Mahi. The Tuna were caught on spoons and by chunk fishing. The Mahi Mahi took a live bait to entice. All and all, it was a decent fishing day, but could’ve been better. But the day wasn’t over yet.
Saturday evening the fishing was incredible. The Tuna bite was on and they were the big boys. Big eyed and Yellowfin fin up to around 100 pounds. Believe me, they make some nice sized Tuna steaks. When a big Tuna takes your bait, get ready. You will have a good fight for about the next hour or more.

We headed back around midnight and stopped the next morning and loaded up on Red Snapper on the way in. What a great time we had. Already on the way in we are talking about next year and how we can not wait. Captain Bill and his deckhands have earned our business for years to come. That is if we can keep the economy headed in the right direction. When All Else Fails (How To Make That Spawning Bass Bite)!

When your fishing for spawning bass, sometimes they will attack anything that comes near that bed. At other times, it can be more difficult. You can be looking at the fish and offer up every lure in the tackle box, only to see her run for cover as it comes her way. Sometimes, the bass will inhale the lure and almost immediately spit it back out before you can even set the hook. Especially a big mamma bass, you know ,they’ve been there and done that. Probably, coming to or near the same spot, year after year, and maybe even she’s been caught and released before. I am gonna share with you a technique that seems to work when nothing else will.
When you see that big bass on the bed and she is being stubborn and not taking you’re lure, you have to entice her into biting. The main reason the bass is there is to lay the eggs and/or to protect the bed, not to eat. You must consider this when choosing your bait. A favorite is a frog or salamander. They naturally eat fish eggs. It is almost instinct for the bass to attack these baits. I’ve also had them to slap the lizard out of the bed without even eating it.
If she still don’t seem to wanna bite, here is a trick that is sure to make her mad enough to attack that lure. Take your plastic lizard and use a knife to open a slit in it. Then purchase a little pack of Alka Seltzer. Break off a small piece of the Alka Seltzer and place it in the slit you created and you are ready to try to make her mad enough to strike. Cast or flip it just behind the bed and drag it onto it slowly and wait. The lizard will now create bubbles that will force her into defense mode. Ninety percent of the time this will produce a vicious strike. After all, she has to protect that nest for her youngins. If you run into one of these bass that doesn’t seem to notice your hard fishing efforts, give the Alka Seltzer a try. It may just be them bubbles that do the trick.
