Beaver Pond Bassin’
If you’re the type of person that enjoys bass fishing but would prefer to stay close to home, more times than not, there is probably a beaver pond not to far away.A beaver pond is created when a beaver uses his teeth to gnaw down trees and then stack it just right to make a dam on a river, creek,or stream.Beavers are for the most part nocturnal, prefering to do their work at night. However,I have seen the occassional beaver out and about during the daylight hours.
The beaver pond I fished today is less than a half mile from my residence in Alabama.(Roll Tide!)Today,I casted a 7 1/2″ Culprit worm. The color is called Tequila Shad. This particular pond is covered with lilly pads which makes a weedless bait a must.I cast my worm across the lilly pads and drag it on top until I find a hole to drop it in.Usually,I let it bounce up and down off the bottom several times before moving to another break in the pads. When the bass are feeding on top,a plastic frog works well. Also, your worm can be rigged without a weight to float across the lilly pads. There is nothing quite like watching a bass explode on your lure from underneath the lilly pads.
The fishing today was not as explosive as I would have liked, but I did reel in a nice one on the first cast.I only fished about an hour, but on this day that was the only one I caught and it was a blast.I actually caught that bass near the bank off a beavers lodge. He didnt appear to be at home today. He may have been out trying to promote his upcoming movie,The Beaver, in which Mel Gibson co-stars.He could be in there waiting on darkness to fall so he can put those teeth to good use.Chances are that at night,he would probably slap that tail in the water and scare me and my fish away.Be sure to cast a few times the next time you come across an ol’ beaver pond.
